In agile software development methodology, the requirements and solutions for a project keep evolving with the time between self-organizing and cross-functional teams. The actual project development is broken down into a number of iterations that the development team develops and delivers as a discrete product increment like a working milestone. In this tutorial, we are going to learn about short iteration which is usually of two to four weeks in duration and known as Sprints in JIRA.
In JIRA, sprint only applies to scrum boards. A sprint in scrum can span one or more than one project at a time when multiple projects are included in the board scrum and have sprint created. Sprint in scrum can be created and viewed on the Backlog page which can be used to prioritize the issues. The below screenshot shows the Backlog page where we can see the option to create the sprint on the right-hand side bottom corner.
Work With Sprints in JIRA:
Creating A Sprint:
A sprint is visible across all the boards if it has issues that belong to the sprint. Below are the steps to create the sprint in JIRA.
- Click on the agile link’s down-arrow which will show the preferred board scrum.
- Click on the backlog board.
- Click on the jira create sprint button present on the top left corner as shown in the screenshot below.
Editing or Reordering A Sprint:
JIRA Agile allows us to edit the name and dates for any sprint which is incomplete. If you want sprints to be arranged in the logical order, with the few clicks you can move entire sprints up or down your board. To edit or reorder a sprint, you need to have the JIRA ‘Project Administrator’ permission for the project(s).
Below are the steps to change the name and dates of sprints that have not been completed yet.
- Click on the agile link’s down-arrow which will show the preferred board.
- Click on the backlog.
- Hover on the name and the dates of the sprint and enter the new names and the dates. Press enter to commit the changes.
To re-order the sprint, below are the steps.
- Click on the agile link’s down-arrow which will show the preferred board.
- Click on the backlog.
- Click the (…) icon present next to Start Sprint for the sprint that you want to move, then choose to Move sprint up or Move sprint down
The below screenshot demonstrates the change of the name and dates of the sprint.

- From the backlog list, right-click on the issue to add it to an existing sprint (here MFP Sprint 1). The below screenshot demonstrates it.
- Issue MFP-2 will be added to an existing sprint (MFP Sprint 1) as shown in the screenshot below.
Removing An Issue From A Sprint:
Below are the steps involved in the removal of an issue from a sprint.
- Click on the agile link’s down-arrow which will show the preferred board.
- Click on the backlog board.
