Starting from version 7.0.0, Katalon users can execute their Desktop App Testing on Windows 10 PC. With this new capability, you also can leverage the Katalon Records feature to easily adopt automated testing for your desktop apps.
Windows record feature enables you to run your desktop apps test cases in the most effective way by recording test actions, inspecting app objects and presenting them in a tree view.
This tutorial will provide you with a step-by-step guide on the process of triggering your first desktop apps testing with Katalon Studio 7.
Start your desktop apps testing using Katalon Windows Record feature
Before we start, make sure you have downloaded Katalon Studio already at katalon.
Step 1: To start recording actions on Windows application, click the icon of Record Windows Action on the main toolbar of Katalon Studio as below:
Step 2: When the dialog box of Windows Recorder is displayed, specify the information at both the Configuration and Application File of CONFIGURATIONS section:
- Configuration: where you can view the WinAppDriver URL and Desired Capabilities. You also can edit the information in this box.
- Application File: where indicates the absolute path to the Windows Executable File (*.exe) of the testing machine. Windows users can click the button Browse… to locate the application file.
The Start button is enabled once the Application File text box is specified. So, when you’re done with all the settings, click Start to get started.
Step 3: Then, the specified Windows application will be opened on a testing machine.
Step 4: The dialog box of Screen View is displayed on the test machine to show the current screenshot of your application.
All objects of your Windows application in that screenshot are analyzed and organized in a tree at the Screen Objects section.
After any object in that tree is chosen, it’s highlighted in the Screen View accordingly.
Step 5: Choose an element in the Possible Actions section as below, and specify an action to perform.
Step 6: Then, all of the actions specified above will be recorded in the Recorded Actions section.
When switching to the Captured Objects section, you can view all elements captured throughout the recording session. Here you can modify the locator of a captured object in the Locator tab of Object Properties. Click Highlight to ensure the new locator correctly identifies the intended object.
Step 7: You can stop the application or start another application if needed. The Refresh Screen button is to help you reload the Screen Objects as well as Screen View.
Step 8: When you’re done with your recording session, click OK to save the recorded actions in Katalon Studio.
Step 9: You can export the recorded steps to a new test case
… with recorded objects and actions saved already as seen below:
Step 10: Click the Run button on the main toolbar and select the Windows icon to execute the test script.
Step 11: The Windows test is executed with those recorded steps accordingly.
Note:
- Make sure that only one action at a time. In other words, while any action is being executed on a test object, there should be no other actions taken on the application.
- Remember to have your screen unlocked while spying, recording or executing a test on your desktop application.
- You’re recommended not to run multiple applications simultaneously.
