In the past topics of this tutorial series, we have covered the basic concepts such as issue, epics, sprints, sub-tasks, boards, etc. to work with the JIRA tool. If users already working on the ‘JIRA Agile with JIRA Cloud’ then they need not install JIRA Agile as its features are already bundled as a commercial add-on. In this tutorial, we are going to learn about JIRA Agile installation and its upgrade for ‘JIRA Agile with JIRA Server’. To begin work below is important information.

- It is recommended to install JIRA Agile outside of office working hours as its installation or upgrade may deteriorate the performance of your server.
- Before you start installing or upgrade JIRA Agile make sure you have the JIRA System Administrators global permission.
- Next check for the supported platforms and versions that JIRA Agile supports.

You need to allocate an extra 256MB or 512MB of RAM in JIRA to support JIRA Agile on the server.
JIRA Agile Installation:
Please note that if you are installing JIRA agile on a server without internet access then you need to manually download the JIRA Agile add-on separately from the Atlassian Marketplace and need to install it by the file upload.
Below are the steps to install JIRA Agile:
Installing the JIRA Agile Add-on:
Steps to install the JIRA Agile Add-on.
- For users working on JIRA 6.3.1 or later have the option of including JIRA Agile during JIRA installation which is bundled with JIRA. Users who have done this do not need to install it again, they need to just upgrade it.
- Next, log in to JIRA with the JIRA System Administrators global permission.
- Click on the ‘cog’ icon on the top bar (for older version need to click on the Administration) and then select Add-ons. It will display the Universal Plugin Manager (UPM) page.
- On the Add-ons page, type and search for ‘JIRA Agile’ in the search box.
- JIRA Agile will appear in the list of searches below the search box.
- Click on the install button, it will successfully install the JIRA Agile and the confirmation message will be displayed.
Entering the JIRA Agile License Key:
Below are the steps to enter the JIRA Agile License key.
- Log into JIRA with the JIRA System Administrators global permission.
- Click on the ‘cog’ icon on the top bar and then select Add-ons.
- In the left menu click on the ‘Manage Add-ons’.
- Enter ‘JIRAAgile’ in the ‘Filter visible add-ons’ and then expand the ‘JIRA Agile’ entry from the filtered results.
- After this, you need to click on the pencil icon present next to the License Key field in order to make it editable.
- Type or copy and paste the license in the License Key field and then click on the Update to finish the authorization to use the installed JIRA Agile Add-on.
Start JIRA Agile:
To start with JIRA Agile, below are the steps.
- JIRA Agile option will be visible on the Agile Tab of JIRA header.
- Click on the agile tab, the dropdown menu will display ‘JIRA Agile’.
- Click on it to start working on JIRA Agile.
Like JIRA, JIRA Agile also supports languages such as English, French, German, Japanese, Dutch, and Spanish languages. Atlassian JIRA team is still working to include more language support in the future which will be unveiled in the future versions of the JIRA Agile.
JIRA Agile Upgradation:
Before you can decide to upgrade JIRA Agile, it is advisable to go through the version-specific release notes to ensure that the current JIRA version that you are working on is compatible with the upgrade version of the JIRA Agile. Below are the steps to upgrade JIRA Agile.
- Log into JIRA with the JIRA System Administrators global permission.
- Click on the ‘cog’ icon on the top bar and then select Add-ons. It will display the universal Plugin Manager (UPM) page.
- Look into the ‘Add-Ons Requiring Action’ section on the ‘Manage Add-ons’ page and locate ‘JIRA Agile’.
- Click on the Update button to install the update for the new version of the JIRA Agile.
- Please note that if you are installing JIRA agile update on a server without internet access then you need to manually download the JIRA Agile add-on update separately from the Atlassian Marketplace and need to install it by the file upload.
Disabling JIRA Agile:
Below are the steps to disable JIRA Agile.
- Log into JIRA with the JIRA System Administrators global permission.
- Click on the ‘cog’ icon on the top bar and then select Add-ons. It will display the Universal Plugin Manager (UPM) page.
- Click on the ‘Check for Purchases’ on the ‘Purchased Add-ons’ page to locate JIRA Agile.
- Click on the Manage button which will display the JIRA Agile add-on details.
- Finally, click on the ‘Disable’ button to disable the JIRA Agile Add on.
‘JIRA Agile’ Add on the feature of the Atlassian JIRA is the powerful mechanism that helps in doing scrum and Kanban in a much detailed way than usual as shown below as a part of JIRA Agile documentation.
